The Cassina Perspective
Cassina, founded in Meda in 1927, launched industrial design in Italy during the 1950s by taking a completely new approach which saw a shift from handcraftsmanship to serial production.
Cassina has always had a pioneering attitude thanks to commitment to research and innovation, combining technological skill with traditional craftsmanship and involving important architects and designers to envision new forms and transform them into projects. Today, ‘The Cassina Perspective’ expresses the company’s values through an eclectic collection where innovative products and Modern icons come together to create welcoming environments, dialoguing according to a unique design code based on excellence.
Vico Magistretti tells about his professional partnership with Cesare and Umberto Cassina:
“I began working with Cassino about thirty years ago.The two brothers, Cesare and Umberto, were opposite but complementary figures, with absolutely perfect company management skills. They were the wizards of coordination of a new production structure. The clear-cut management division of their work was the basic ingredient for a complete union. Cesare worked on what to put into production, while Umberto decided how and when to produce. (…) This combination of the two brothers was capable of creating an absolutely long-lasting and solid situation. This has been proven by time and the pro ducts. (…) Umberto was the real entrepreneur of the company who, with his calmness and rationality, was able to support the eccentricity of his brother who looked, felt, saw, understood with strong intuition and paved new paths in the production sector. Umberto made sure that these new paths did not end up being a lost cause.”
Umberto Cassina talks about Vico:
“Every year, every two at the latest, we do things together. Magistretti said it well: when he has an idea, he calls us. We hardly ask for a specific product. It happens that we meet each other and we say: do you remember how you solved that pipe’s issue two years ago? It always comes from a sign that settles and then re-emerges to be elaborated.”
